Some People’s Lives

(script), (illustrations)

Fifteen portraits painted by Martin Jarrie and depicted by François Morel, gathered in 72 pages full of humour and tenderness. A snapshot of French suburbs, far from the usual clichés.

In 2011, illustrator Martin Jarrie was appointed to work on the city and its inhabitants in a Parisian suburb. The idea of painting portraits quickly stood out. He met 15 persons and asked each of them to choose an object dear to him/her. Then he sent these portraits, people and objects, to François Morel. The rules had been fixed: everyone knew that both the author and the artist would be free to reinvent it all. By deciding to give the same importance to common objects and to the portraits of their proprietor, Martin Jarrie was already telling life stories. In the same spirit, François Morel put in his texts all his talent to tell the beauty of everyday life, and the greatness of our “tiny lives”.
