L’étrange collection de Mamita
Derrière chaque collection se cache un collectionneur ou une collectionneuse, et derrière chaque collectionneur ou collectionneuse…. Une histoire.
Faire une collection, c’est rassembler tout un tas d’objets d’une même famille, exactement comme le fait Yvette, qui ramasse tous les bouts de bois en forme de « Y ». Et il en existe autant qu’il existe de collectionneurs ! C’est ce qu’explique Mamita à Yvette, sa petite fille, en rentrant de l’école.
À travers bois, Mamita raconte : les cailloux sur le sentier, ce sont les objets favoris de son ami Luigi, car ils l’aident à se rappeler de chaque moment passé. Sacha, le cousin d’Yvette, est zinzin de toutes sortes d’objets luminescents car il a peur du noir. Quant à Mamita, elle collectionne… les collections des autres.
Les enfants sont les rois des collections. Mais de nombreux artistes aussi ont des collections (certains collectionneurs évoqués dans l’album existent réellement, artistes d’art brut notamment). C’est ce lien poétique entre l’enfance, la création, et les collectionneurs que les auteurs ont voulu explorer. Collectionner n’est pas seulement amasser. C’est aussi imaginer et regarder attentivement le monde et créer du sens. Et c’est exactement à cela que les peintures fourmillantes et colorées de Lisbeth Renardy, illustratrice belge, nous invitent : imaginer.

Behind each collection, there’s a collector. And behind each collector, there’s a story to tell!
To collect stuff is the action of gathering a whole lot of objects belonging to one group or family: take Yvette, for instance, who collects all pieces of wood shaped as a Y. And there are as many collections as there are collectors! That’s what Mamita, Yvette’s grandma, explains to her on the way back from school.
Throughout the woods, Mamita tells the story of her friend Luigi’s collection, who loves collecting rocks because they help him remembering each moment past. Sasha, Yvette’s cousin, is crazy about all kinds of luminescent objects, because he’s scared of the dark. How about Mamita? Well, Mamita collects… other people’s collections.
Children have mastered the art of collecting. But many artists, too, have collections (some of the collectors mentioned in the book are real, especially the “low art” or Art brut artists.) This poetic relationship between childhood, creation and collectors is what authors have wanted to explore here. Collecting is not just about gathering. It is also a way of thoroughly looking at the world and making a meaning out of it. In one word, it’s about imagining. And that’s exactly what we’re invited to do throughout the coloured, teeming with details paintings by the Belgian illustrator Lisbeth Renardy: to imagine.
